Children and young people need spaces to play - outside, in the fresh area, in nature. That not only refers to playgrounds, but any open spaces close to their homes, in their community, neighbourhood and city. They should be child-centred, inspiring and diverse. They should be easy and safe to reach and encourage playful experiences.
In recent decades, as cities and communities developed spatially, too little attention was paid to children’s needs. The dramatic increase in traffic and the loss of open spaces has led to children spending less and less time outdoors in the fresh air. We now know that children and young people who don’t grow up with suitable space to play outdoors demonstrate deficits in their physical, mental and spiritual development.

In light of that fact, the model of a child- and family-friendly city comes to the fore. Local authorities need to act in this regard.
